History

Silver Street, Inc. was incorporated in June 1979 to manufacture and sell electric guitars and musical accessories. The company’s founders were brothers Bruce and Craig Hardy. Production of solid-body guitars commenced in Elkhart, IN and was subsequently moved to Shelby, MI.

Silver Street’s first offering was the small-bodied Taxi model. The Taxi’s innovative design was the subject of a U.S. patent application that was filed in 1981 and granted in 1983. Five pre-production Taxi prototypes were engineered and built by legendary luthier Richard Schneider.

Subsequent Silver Street models included the Cobra, Spitfire, Nightwing, MX, Tommy Shaw and top-of-the-line Elite.  All models were offered in several configurations featuring various pickups and hardware.

The Manufacturers Suggested List Price for Silver Street guitars ranged from $449.00 for a single-pickup Taxi model to $889.00 for a basic Elite model.  Actual retail or street prices are not known.

In addition to solid-body guitars, Silver Street offered a range of other products including guitar cases, drum accessories and DeadRinger drum heads.

Production of Silver Street guitars ended by 1986 and the company’s facilities were subsequently devoted to the manufacture of high-quality library furniture.
